Gmail is a free, advertising-supported email service developed by Google. Users can access Gmail on the web and using third-party programs that synchronize email content through POP or IMAP protocols.

Gmail has over one billion active users as of April 2019, making it the world's largest free email service. It was initially advertised as an alternative to Microsoft Outlook, Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail, but its user interface is now more closely aligned with webmail clients like those offered by competitors such as Yahoo and Microsoft.

In addition to web applications, there are official mobile apps for Android and iOS (iPhone), and unofficial clients for other platforms. Gmail is accessible through IMAP, POP3 and SMTP on the World Wide Web with any Internet browser running HTML5 (such as Google Chrome) or a mail client that supports IMAP (for example Apple Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird). Gmail supports email archiving (labeled All Mail) in HTML format until October 2019 when it will be changed to searchable PDF format.

There are many free email services that you can use instead of Gmail. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  1. ProtonMail

ProtonMail is a free encrypted email service that's based in Switzerland, which means it has some of the strongest privacy laws in the world. It also uses end-to-end encryption to protect your messages from being read by anyone else.

  1. Fastmail

Fastmail is a paid web-based email service with a focus on speed and security. It offers features like two-factor authentication, unlimited email aliases and custom domains for $4 per month.

  1. Zoho Mail

Zoho Mail is a cloud-based email service from Zoho Corporation that gives users access to multiple accounts from one dashboard. The basic version is free, but if you want more features such as add-ons for file sharing or calendar management, there are paid plans starting at $5 per month for small businesses (and up to $50 per month for large companies).
